Venice is at heart a Catholic city. Like many Italian cities, there’s a church on every corner. These churches link up to create a maze of parishes that formed the heart of Venetian social and family life.

We walked through a couple churches today. Unlike American churches, Venetian churches drip with paintings and ornaments. Walk into a church here, and you really start to comprehend the power of Rome for thousands of years.

Venice is and has been a tourist center for hundreds of years. As a nation focused on commerce and business, Venetians quickly realized over the years that tourism brings in money. Today tourists outnumber Venetians at an alarming level.

Masks are a Venetian tradition. Carnivale season in the winter is a time of dress up and masquerades. Year round, you can find a variety of colorful masks decorated in a variety of styles.

Venice may be a tourist trap, but for me it’s a city of amazing color and history!
